Background:

Kung-fu is a general term that in Chinese means achievement through great effort. While it can be applied to any skill that one develops it has become a popular term for the martial arts that developed in China prior to the current communist government. Although there are many different styles of martial arts that have come out of China, most can be described as being of either northern or southern descent. The styles that developed in northern China tend to have low stances and utilize a wide range of kicking techniques. The southern styles tend to have a more natural stance and rely more heavily on boxing techniques. There are also some styles of kung-fu which mimic animals in their movements and fighting styles.

Class Description:

The general work out program includes stretching, breathing exercises (Qi-gong exercises), warm-up drills, moving and coordination drills, self-defense techniques, and forms of training in both northern and southern styles. Students will learn how to apply and escape from holds, joint locks, throws, and takedowns while developing the proper technique for quick strikes and submissions. Once a student is ready they will begin to learn various forms that will reinforce attack and defense techniques.

Class Description:

The Sexual Assault Violence Education and Defense (S.A.V.E.D.) program was created by black belt and certified instructor Tim Mount to help women effectively defend themselves in real-life sexual assault situations. The workshop prepares women to prevent sexual violence by introducing common sense strategies and verbal resistance techniques to ward off attackers. However, the main benefit of the workshop is the simple, proven self-defense techniques that can be used by all women, regardless of their size or athletic ability. Contrary to the myth that you will get hurt worse if you fight back, research shows that resisting an assault is an effective strategy for women.The workshop is designed to be an active and engaging way to learn these techniques in a fun environment. Don’t let yourself become a victim!

Class Description:

Popular mixed martial arts tournaments (UFC, Pride) have proven that grappling and submission techniques form the foundation of any serious martial artist’s skill set. Judo and jiu-jitsu, two of the world’s most practiced martial arts, are the only disciplines that encompass the entire range of standing and ground grappling techniques. Students learn a progressive and cutting edge form of judo and jiu-jitsu that emphasizes practical, easy-to-learn techniques. Outdated training methods, popular among traditional clubs, are replaced with dynamic drills and “live” practice time.

Students learn to throw an attacker to the ground with force and control, and then subdue their opponent by using joint locks, chokes, and dominant positions. The class is active and engaging, allowing students to immediately apply the techniques they learn to real world situations. Essential self-defense skills are developed while students enjoy an unparalleled workout that builds strength, increases flexibility, and boosts endurance in a fun safe environment.

Class: Capoeira

Background of Capoeira:

Capoeira is a uniquely Brazilian martial art dating back to the 16th century with a recent growth in popularity in recent years partly due to exposure in film and television. Movements are graceful, almost dance-like combinations of kicks, throws, acrobatics, and ground movements that enhance awareness, flexibility, and strength. When learning Capoeira, a student will be exposed to a fighting style, music, and the Brazilian culture. Capoeira is most of all very fun and is a great workout for the body and the mind!

Class Description:

Classes start out with a warm up and stretching sessions to increase flexibility. The class is a group format but frequently encompasses work with partners. Students will learn foundational movements and escapes combined with sequences to mimic real capoeira situations.

This class is designed for runners of all levels and abilities who want to improve their running form, efficiency, and overall cardiovascular health. It will also prepare you for the Silver Strand Half Marathon on Sunday November 16. Class will consist of a speed-based track workout on the SDSU track Thursday evenings and a long distance, endurance-based run at the beach Sunday mornings.

Class Description:

Through the practice of meditation you will be able to explore your inner reality as well as get a direct look at how you perceive the world. The Salsa class will focus on entry-level skills of lead and follow, and the timing and movement of club style salsa, meringue, and cha-cha. No experience or dancing partner required to participate.

Dress:
Any types of leather soled shoes are fine to wear. Tennis shoes with socks pulled over them like a glove work too. Being comfortable and having fun is most important while dancing.

Class Description:

Learn everything you need to know to be a basic CPR/AED and First Aid rescuer all in one day. This is the perfect class for families, friends, and anyone wanting to learn safety tips and procedures.  The class consists of two parts: four hours of CPR/AED training and three hours of First Aid training.

The Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) portion of class will teach you the skill to perform CPR on adults, children, and infants. You will learn the ABC’s of a rescue, practice on dummies, and be given scenarios to test your knowledge.

The Automated External Defibrillator (AED) portion of the class will give you the skills to operate the computerized medical device. AEDs are becoming more commonly found at colleges, airports and local gyms.  It is proven to help increase the chances of survival for victims of cardiac arrest. You will practice with a training AED unit which is very similar to the real thing.   

The First Aid portion will teach you to recognize emergencies in the workplace or in the community and how to provide first aid assistance until medical professionals arrive. The class will consist of an educational video, instructor discussion and real life scenario practices.

At the conclusion of this course you will receive a course completion card through the American Heart Association and Medic First Aid valid for two years.
