2006-2007 Sport Club of the Year: Women’s Lacrosse
We started off the season with confidence, after being crowned the D-II champions in the Western Women’s Lacrosse League at the end of the 2006 season, following an amazing 12-0 record in 2005.
Coach Kelley Queisser and assistant coach Kristine (KJ) Johnson led us in our fifth year as a club sport team at SDSU, and our second year as apart of the Division-I Southern Conference of the WWLL. We proved that we were the winning team in San Diego by beating both USD and UCSD by 13 goals a piece. We established our reputation as a unit that can also compete with East Coast teams, where lacrosse has been a popular sport for years, unlike on the West Coast. We defeated visiting University of Massachusetts by an impressive score of 15-3, and beat Loyola University in Maryland by a final score of 17-8. Once ranked as high as 4th in the nation for women’s club lacrosse teams this season, we finished our 2007 season as the D-I South Champions, and ended up being ranked in the top ten in the nation.
Our squad consisted of 14 seasoned veterans and 13 rookies. Our team always played with passion and sense of purpose. Although we will lose 5 seniors next season, the team promises to have a deep, experienced and competitive group of returners. Our team is continuing to grow strong and will once again be a tough competitor in the Spring 2008 season. Go Lady Aztecs!
