SDSU Surf Team

The SDSU Surf Team has had it's most productive season in years. With a 26 people strong the men and women of this team dedicated hours and hours of time in the water to get ready to defend three pending State titles. The State Championships were held on March 9th - 11th in Huntington Beach, California. There, the chosen few worked their way through grueling rounds of competition gaining much needed points for the team. IN the end SDSU would have two mens finalist Doug Van Mierlo who finished fourth and Colin Weinberg who finished fifth overall, as well as a Women's Finalist Marissa Shaw who rounded out Fifth. Long boarder Ben Swift would come up just short of his final losing by a few points in the semi, however still gathered huge points for the team. By the third day of competition SDSU had won by a landslide, crushing all other schools and receiving a Fourth consecutive NSSA State Title. These accomplishments may we remind are monumental both for the individuals who compete at such a high level as well as a team who can remain so successful for so many years in a row. SDSU Surf Team is here to stay and will be planning on bringing home their first National Title since 2007 this year in June.

Chelsea Woerle

Athlete of the Month

This month's San Diego State University Sports Club Athlete of the month goes to a Women's Volleyball player, Chelsea Woerle. Chelsea is a fourth year student at SDSU and she has played club volleyball for three years. Chelsea is an outside hitter, and at the Southern California Collegiate Volleyball Tournament on Saturday March 24, 2012 she won one of the all-tournament awards for being an outstanding athlete. Chelsea really helped her team out by coming up off of the bench to help SDSU win Second Place in the tournament. She had many kills, blocks, and passes throughout the day, and proved that she is truly an outstanding athlete. Not only is Chelsea a great athlete, but she is also a great student. Chelsea is a Kinesiology student with a strong background in Biology, and she continues to maintain a high GPA while playing volleyball. We wish Chelsea the best of luck at our National Collegiate Volleyball Tournament in Kansa City, Missouri April 5-7, 2012.

Rugby Team

The SDSU Rugby team started February with a close loss to 3rd ranked UCSB. The following weekend the 7s team headed out to Las Vegas to compete in the Collegiate Rugby Championship Qualifier. The Aztecs started out their first day of pool play going 2-0 beating New Mexico State University 33-0 and Denver University 19-7. The second day the Aztecs beat Western Washington 28-5 and advanced first in their group. In the quarter finals SDSU hammered Air Force 34-5 punching their ticket to the conference semi-finals against defending national champions. In the semis Aztecs lost with a last second try to Life University. After the Las Vegas performance SDSU bounced back and finished the month off with a win against USD, 54-17 a team that State lost to first semester. This positioned the Aztecs in 2nd place in the Pacific Mountain West Conference keeping them on track to qualify for playoffs.

Athlete of the Month

Dan Truax

As a new member to the team this year we were unsure of his ability to compete. However Dan showed up to every practice with enthusiasm and time and time again showed improvement in his surfing throughout the season. Dan went on to make it to four finals out of our four league contests of the season. He alone helped us gain crucial points to clinch the NSSA (National Surfing Scholastic Association) Western Conference Title in January. Unfortunately Last week Dan Broke his wrist and we were unable to enter him in to the State Championship over March 9th-11th where he would be going up against the best in the state to help once again take home another Championship. SDSU Still accomplished it's goal this weekend without but Dan definitely deserves to be recognized for his dedication to the team and the sport of surfing.

Women's Soccer

The SDSU Women's Club Soccer team went undefeated during league with victories over UCSD, USD, UC Irvine, Long Beach State, and CSU Fullerton. As a number one seed in the Women's Premiere South Division, the team qualified to play in the Regional Tournament hosted by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. The team advanced to the quarter finals to take on five time defending Nationals Champs, UCSB. The team battled through two tough halves and two over time periods, while playing down a player and proceeded to take on the champs to a round of PK's after a 1-1 tie. Although the team lost in PK's, the Aztecs received one of the three at large bids to play in the Championship Bracket at the NCCS National Soccer Championship Tournament. The team fought hard in bracket play however, proceeded to move on to the consolation bracket. The team made it to the quarter finals which would allow the Aztecs to finish 12th in the Nation out of over 130 teams. The team would also like to acknowledge all of the seniors who will not be returning next fall, thank you all for your hard work and dedication.

Athlete of the Month

Kalei Konrad

Aztec Rugby is close to the finish of a successful fall season. The Aztecs have partaken in multiple 7's competitions in which they have faced some of the top college and club sides and even a couple of international sides. The men's last competition was in Moraga, California where the Aztec's competed in the California 7's qualifier for nationals. The team came together and played excellent, evening claiming the scalp of national powerhouse Cal-Berkeley. The men finished second at the tournament, which qualifies them for the upcoming national championship in Texas.

Everyone on the team played well and contributed to the wins, however one Aztec shined brighter than the others. Kalei Konrad, second year flyhalf, led the team with his creative and exciting style of play. The Aztec's have plenty of headstrong runners, but few players can run with the finesse Kalei's possesses. Like all great flyhalfs, Kalei is not a selfish player and more often than not uses his ability to create space for other players to score.

Kalei's exceptional play does not go unrecognized. He has been invited to attend the upcoming Junior All-American's camp in Santa Barbra this December. Kalei will join some of the top young rugby talents in the country at this camp, where he will have the opportunity to earn a chance to represent his country. Kalei's commitment to the team extends further from the field though. Kalei is the secretary of the rugby club here at SDSU, where he does his part to keep the club heading in the right direction. The Aztec Rugby program is very proud of this young man and couldn't think of a better candidate for Athlete of the Month.

Sport Club Of the Month

Surf Surf Team had a goal to start the year off with a bang, and that's exactly what we did. First off, the season opener which took place at Blacks beach went very well for the team. We showed up, dominated the competition, and walked away with 1st place overall. The second contest at Sea-Side Reef in Carlsbad was very similar to the first event. The team showed up, and was on point throughout the entire event, allowing us to place 1st yet again. In addition to competing, the team held a movie premiere/fundraiser at the Wave House is Mission Beach. With tons of prizes donated from our sponsors such as Red Bull, Sun Diego, Volcom, Globe, Klen Laundry, and many others, we raised over $1400 in one night. The team plans on continuing their success at the next contest as well as gaining more support for next year!
