Aquaplex Learn to Swim Lessons


LEVEL 1

Stand up Paddling at Sunset

The Learn to Swim Level 1 course is designed to familiarize youth to swimming with the course objectives while focusing on staying safe in, on, and around the water. The Level 1 course involves introductory water skills to help acclimate students to the aquatic environment while providing an interactive learning experience.

Recommended course participant age: 6-10 years old

Course location: Aztec Aquaplex - Recreation pool

Course Prerequisites: There are no pre-requisites for this course.

Course objectives:

  • Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side
  • Blow bubbles through mouth and nose
  • Bobbing
  • Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
  • Front and back glides and floats
  • Recover to vertical position
  • Roll from front to back and back to front
  • Tread water using arm and hand actions
  • Alternating and simultaneous leg actions on front and back
  • Alternating and simultaneous arm actions on front and back
  • Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
  • Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency and knowing how to call for help
  • Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety

CLASS SIZE: Min. 3 / Max. 6

Course completion skills:

  • Enter independently, using either the ramp, steps or side, travel at least 5 yards, bob 5 times, then safely exit the water.
  • Glide on front at least 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 5 seconds and recover to a vertical position. (*This skill can be performed with assistance)

LEVEL 2

Stand up Paddling at Sunset

The Learn to Swim Level 2 course is the advanced introductory course designed to familiarize youth to more advanced basic swimming skills focusing on staying safe in, on, and around the water. The Level 2 course builds on skills learned in the Level 1 course while still acclimating students to the aquatic environment. This course builds on the progression of swimming and teaches students how to complete aquatic skills independently while providing an interactive learning experience.

Recommended course participant age: 6-12 years old

Course location: Aztec Aquaplex - Recreation pool

Course Prerequisites: We recommend participants complete the Learn to Swim Level 1 course prior to enrolling in Level 2. However, previous swim experience, comfortability in the water, and/or successful completion of the Course objectives for Level 1 fulfills the course prerequisite requirements.

Course objectives:

  • Enter and exit water by stepping or jumping from the side
  • Fully submerge and hold breath
  • Bobbing
  • Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
  • Front, jellyfish and tuck floats
  • Front and back glides and floats
  • Recover to vertical position
  • Roll from front to back and back to front
  • Change direction of travel while swimming on front or back
  • Tread water using arm and leg actions
  • Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
  • Finning arm action
  • Learn how to stay safe, including recognizing an emergency, knowing how to call for help and perform simple non-swimming assists
  • Learn how to stay safe in, on and around the water, including the use of a life jacket, recognizing lifeguards and sun safety
  • Learn to look carefully before entering the water
  • Learn what to think about and do when exhausted or caught in a dangerous situation

CLASS SIZE: Min. 3 / Max. 6

Course completion skills:

  • Step from side into chest-deep water, pushing off the bottom, move into a treading water or floating position for at least 15 seconds, swim on front and/or back for 5 body lengths, then exit the water
  • Move into a back float for 15 seconds, roll to front, then recover to a vertical position
  • Push off and swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for 5 body lengths, roll to back, float for 15 seconds, roll to the front, then continue swimming for 5 body lengths.

LEVEL 3

Stand up Paddling at Sunset

The Learn to Swim Level 3 course is designed to develop the fundamental swimming strokes while focusing on staying safe in, on, and around the water. The Level 3 course builds on skills learned in the Level 2 course while working towards a goal of swimming independently. This course introduces some of the main swim strokes and skills including but not limited to front crawl, elementary backstroke, and kicks such as the breaststroke and scissors kick. Level 3 participants will develop additional water safety skills including treading water, side breathing and headfirst entries.

Recommended course participant age: 6-12 years old

Course location: Aztec Aquaplex - Recreation pool

Course Prerequisites: We recommend participants complete the Learn to Swim Level 2 course prior to enrolling in Level 3. However, previous swim experience and/or successful completion of the course objectives for Level 2 fulfill the course prerequisite requirements.

Course objectives:

  • Enter water by jumping from the side
  • Headfirst entries from the side in sitting and kneeling positions
  • Bobbing while moving toward safety
  • Rotary breathing
  • Survival float
  • Back float
  • Change from vertical to horizontal position on front and back
  • Tread water
  • Flutter, scissor, dolphin and breaststroke kicks on front
  • Front crawl and elementary backstroke
  • Learn to look carefully before entering the water
  • Learn to perform simple non-swimming assists
  • Learn to recognize, prevent and respond to cold water emergencies

CLASS SIZE: Min. 3 / Max. 7

Course completion skills:

  • Jump into deep water from the side, recover to the surface, maintain position by treading or floating for 1 minute, rotate one full turn then turn as necessary to orient to the exit point. Level off, swim front crawl and/or elementary backstroke for 25 yards, and then exit the water.
  • Push off in a streamlined position then swim front crawl for 15 yards, change position and direction as necessary, swim elementary backstroke for 15 yards, then exit the water.
