Aquaplex Non-Credit Certification Courses


Recreation Pool Aztec Aquaplex

American Red Cross Certification courses at the Aquaplex are available to Aztec Recreation members, SDSU students/faculty/staff and the San Diego community. All courses are taught by certified American Red Cross Instructors.

REGISTRATION

Students can register in person at the Aztec Aquaplex, over the phone 619-594-7946 or through Secure Registration website.  

Following official registration for the class, students will be contacted directly by the instructor 5-7 days prior to the course with additional class details including items to bring, schedule reminder, and non-member waiver forms.

CLASS TRANSFERS, CANCELLATIONS & REFUNDS

Students must notify the Aztec Aquaplex Coordinator directly at least 72 hours prior to the first class meeting to request a class transfer.

The Aztec Aquaplex has the right to cancel any course that does not meet the minimum number of students.  If the class is cancelled, participants will be notified 24 hours prior to the first day of the scheduled class. Any enrolled students in a class that is cancelled due to low enrollment or facility closures will have the option to transfer their fees to a future course or receive a full refund.

Students can request for a full class refund up to prior to the first day of the scheduled class. After the first class meeting students are not eligible for a refund. Students who do not successfully complete the course or course prerequisites, do not attend all scheduled class dates and times, do not pass course land and water skills with proficiency (according to the American Red Cross requirements) or do not pass the written exam with a score of at least 80 percent are not eligible for a refund.

Lifeguarding Course

Lifeguard Aztec Aquaplex

American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification Course

Course overview: The Lifeguard Certification course provides entry-level participants the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over.

  • Course length: 28 hours
  • Course certification: Students that successfully complete this course will obtain a American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, valid for 2 years.
  • Pre-requisites:
    1. Participants must meet the minimum age requirement of 15 years +
    2. Swim 300 yards continuously
    3. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
    4. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Surface dive to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point.  Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

  • Course enrollment limits: min - 3 students / max - 10 students



Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification Course

Course overview: The American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification course will train and certify students to teach Red Cross swimming, springboard diving and water safety presentations and courses.

  • Course length: 32 hours
  • Course certification: Students that successfully complete this course will obtain a American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification, valid for 2 years.
  • Pre-requisites:
    1. Participants must meet the minimum age requirement of 16 years +
    2. Demonstrate swimming skills consistent with the Level 4 Stroke Performance Charts (PDF):
      • Front crawl- 25 yards
      • Back crawl- 25 yards
      • Breast stroke- 25 yards
      • Elementary backstroke - 25 yards
      • Sidestroke - 25 yards
      • Butterfly - 15 yards
      • Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
      • Tread water for 1 minute
  • Course cost:  $ TBD Aztec Recreation member/ $ TBD Non- Aztec Recreation member (*Includes American red cross support fee for certification processing)
  • Course enrollment limits: min - 3 students / max - 6 students
