Class Description:

This course teaches students basic concepts associated with indoor cycling including how to build endurance, muscular strength and flexibility through structured individualized cycling workouts. Instruction will include intervals, hill climbs and coasts for building a complete workout.

Class Description:

Fitness Training for Women is an introductory-level course. Students will learn proper exercise technique and how to create effective exercise routines.  Additional topics discussed will include cardiovascular training, pre and post training nutrition, and proper weight lifting safety.  Class structure will include one lecture day and one work out day, per week.

Class Description:

This Course introduces the fundamental skills of Olympic Weightlifting for personal fitness, and athletic strength and conditioning. The scope and sequence of this course includes the teaching progressions of the Snatch, Clean& Jerk, and all associated movements. Participants will gain knowledge and experience of programming of training for both competitive weightlifters and for athletes using the weightlifting movements for strength and power development as it applies their chosen sport. Familiarity in Power Lifts is highly encouraged.

The ENS 138 Beginning swim fitness is an activity based course designed for students interested in improving their swim strokes and fitness levels. This course focuses on stroke refinement and endurance training for swimming including technique instruction, injury prevention, stroke drills, and speed training exercises.

REQUIRED COURSE PREREQUISITES: Basic knowledge and demonstration of swimming competitive swim strokes including the front crawl (freestyle), back crawl (backstroke), breaststroke and butterfly. Students are not required to have a competitive swimming background; however students must be comfortable with swimming approximately 45 minutes.

Class Description:

The Advanced Swim Fitness course is an activity based course focuses on the cardio conditioning of swimming. This course focuses on training techniques for students interested in building endurance for swimming. This course will also include topics such as swimming injury prevention, utilizing pace clocks, interval training, and developing swim sets to reach personal goals. Each class meeting students will swim approximately 800-1500 yards.

Required course prerequisites: Basic knowledge and demonstration of swimming competitive swim strokes including the front crawl (freestyle), back crawl (backstroke), breaststroke and butterfly. Class Description:

Students will learn the origins of the Pilates system and the basis of the exercises. We will build from the basics to the advanced movements, learning the full program throughout the semester. Students will learn to modify exercises, progress them, and to use equipment as an option. The Pilates exercises focus on building strength in the core muscles of the torso and help enhance posture and agility.

Class Description:

You do not need to be an expert or at the peak of physical fitness to participate in this course. The course focuses on technique, so that even a beginner will come to have a thorough understanding of how to sequence poses and practice inversions properly avoiding strain and injury. Students will gain knowledge about the basic techniques of general poses with emphasis on inversions primarily Salumba Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand) and Salumba Sirsasana (Head Stand) as well as their preparatory poses. Maximize physical skills and conditioning including increase flexibility, strength, coordination and endurance.

Class Description:

The course begins with a review of basic Standing poses, Forward bends and Back bends. We will then build upon those fundamentals leading to more intermediate poses.  The length of stay will also increase to maximize the benefits.  Emphasis and focus will also be upon their basic structure and alignment which is essential for building a fundamentally sound intermediate practice.  Following this development of these basic yogic ideas and practices’ which takes approximately one-half of the class, the remainder of the class  address’ the sequence for inversions which are preparations for ’Beginning’ Shoulder Stand and Head Stand’.  Specific step-by-step instructions will be given to assure that all poses especially the inverted poses are done properly and executed safely.  We will also learn and express the names of the poses in Sanskrit and their transliteration into English.
