ADAPTED ATHLETICS SUMMER 2026 NEWSLETTER

SUPPORT OUR ATHLETES

SDSU Adapted Athletics is the first and only competitive, collegiate adaptive sports program in California. We are grateful for all the support we’ve received. While our program does receive financial support from Associated Students, the program also relies on donations to support our athletes and cover program expenses, including college scholarships, competition and travel expenses, and adaptive equipment.

There are multiple meaningful ways you can support us as we empower adaptive athletes to reach their dreams on and off the field. You can make a tax-deductible, one-time or recurring gift by clicking the donate button below.

To learn more about other ways you can make donations, sponsor, or partner with our program, contact us at arc.adaptedathletics@sdsu.edu.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

As I reflect on the 2025–26 academic year, one word comes to mind: breakthrough. This year was filled with record-setting achievements, historic firsts, and meaningful progress that continues to position SDSU Adapted Athletics as a leader in the collegiate adaptive sport movement.

The most visible examples came through two landmark events. Our Wheelchair Tennis Invitational welcomed the largest crowd ever to watch a match at the Aztec Tennis Center, as more than 230 supporters joined us in person and online, including SDSU President Adela de la Torre, to witness an unforgettable 15-game battle between SDSU and the University of Arizona. Then, just weeks later, our Adapted Sports Showcase shattered attendance records with more than 275 attendees and 18 organizations providing resources and support to students, families, and community members. Both events demonstrated not only the growing interest in adaptive sport but the strength of the community surrounding it.

Our success extends far beyond competitions and events. This year, our student-athletes achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.5, continuing to demonstrate excellence in the classroom while competing at the highest levels of sport. And perhaps most importantly, after months of advocacy and education, President de la Torre announced unanimous approval of IRA funding support for Adapted Athletics, with funding beginning in the 2026–27 academic year. This investment represents a transformative step forward for the long-term sustainability of our program.

As we build toward the LA28 Paralympic Games, we are also looking beyond them. Strategic planning is already underway to ensure SDSU is prepared to meet the opportunities that will emerge as the university program closest to the Games. We were also proud to support San Diego's bid to host the 2029 Invictus Games, another potential opportunity to elevate adaptive sport on the world stage.

To our donors, sponsors, and partners, the future of Adapted Athletics has never looked brighter. Thank you for helping us continue to build it.

Go Aztecs!

RGK Wheelchair Unboxing

360 spin of the new unboxed red and black RGK wheelchair. Cue upbeat electronic music.

Coach Greg Hasterok speaks in his wheelchair. Speaking to the camera he says “Hi, my name is Greg Hasterok. I’m the head wheelchair tennis coach here at SDSU and today I’m going to be unboxing a brand RGK…”

He continues speaking by saying “... sub 4 day chair” as he slices open a cardboard box and reveals stuffing in the box.

He reveals and takes out the wheelchair in bubble wrap inside the box and says “RGK is one of our sponsors here at the university.”

Unwrapping bubble wrap and putting the backing on the chair.

He slices and opens a white and red box containing the wheelchair wheels then removes them from the box.

He puts the spokes on the wheels.

He pumps up the wheels with a neon green electric air pump.

He puts on the wheels on both sides of the wheelchair.

Coach Greg is back to speaking in his wheelchair and looks at the built wheelchair and says “Finally got the chair out of the box, was able to put the backrest upholstery on…”.

The chair spins in a 180 degree circle with a voiceover of the coach saying “...which is really really nice. Super comfortable”.

Video cuts back to him in his wheelchair and continues to talk about the RGK chair by saying “Has a really cool little pocket here in the back to store things”.

90 degree spin of the chair with Greg’s voiceover saying “I have a nice little pouch in the front as well. Thank you so much RGK. Frame is incredibly beautiful. Super light. Carbon fiber sideguards. Metal breaks here” as he points to each part of the chair.

Close up of the wheelchair with Greg’s voiceover saying “Love the red and black, go Aztecs!”. Then the camera pulls back to reveal Greg grabbing the chair and saying “This is a fantastic chair. Very excited to start using it!”.

He looks right into the camera and says “RGK thank you so much, you’re the best”. Cuts to black.

FEATURE:BEYOND COMPETITION

SUPPORTING THE WHOLE STUDENT-ATHLETE

At SDSU Adapted Athletics, success is measured by more than performances on the court, track, or field. While competition remains a central part of the student-athlete experience, we believe coaching is about more than sports alone. Our philosophy combines high-level athletic development with a commitment to personal growth, leadership, academic achievement, and community, creating an environment where athletes are empowered to excel in all areas of life.

Like any collegiate athletic program, our student-athletes balance a wide range of responsibilities every day. Alongside training sessions, practices, competitions, and travel, they are attending classes, preparing for exams, pursuing degrees, building professional experience, and working toward future career goals. To be a member of the program, student-athletes are expected to pursue excellence in the classroom just as they do in competition. Today, athletes in the program hold an average cumulative GPA of 3.5, reflecting the dedication, discipline, and perseverance they bring to both their academic and athletic pursuits. Their success in the classroom is a testament to the same commitment that drives them to compete at the highest levels of their sport.

While every athlete's journey is unique, no one succeeds alone. Behind each student-athlete is a network of coaches, staff, teammates, training partners, and support professionals who are invested in their success. For TJ Donnan, a dual-sport athlete pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering, that individual focus starts right on the front lines. "The coaches are incredibly supportive," TJ says. "Whether in the gym or on the track, they ensure every athlete has the tools, guidance, and environment they need to be successful." That same passion extends to the nutrition and PT crews, who have helped TJ improve his mobility and learn to properly fuel his body for long-term health. Through resources such as strength and conditioning, nutrition, physical therapy, mental performance, and academic support, SDSU Adapted Athletics strives to provide the foundation athletes need to thrive. Just as importantly, athletes become part of a community that understands the challenges and opportunities that come with balancing collegiate athletics, academics, and everyday life.

The impact of that support extends far beyond competition. Through their experiences as student-athletes, individuals develop skills that will serve them throughout their lives, including leadership, communication, resilience, self-advocacy, and teamwork. Success within SDSU Adapted Athletics is not defined solely by records, rankings, or medals. It can be seen in the student who earns a degree while competing nationally or internationally, the athlete who secures an internship or career opportunity, the teammate who helps build a stronger community, and the graduate who leaves SDSU prepared to make an impact wherever life takes them next.

As SDSU Adapted Athletics continues to grow, our commitment remains the same: to provide student-athletes with the support, resources, and opportunities necessary to pursue excellence in competition while also thriving in the classroom, within their communities, and in their personal and professional aspirations.
