The National Club Baseball Association (NCBA) was established in 2000 and is the only national governing body for collegiate club baseball in the United States. They are driven to provide collegiate student-athletes the opportunity to play competitive, organized college baseball and to continually improve this experience for all participants. Today there are over 300 teams and 7,500 student-athletes participating in the NCBA.

In addition to Aztec Recreation Sport Club requirements, to be eligible to play in the NCBA, you must:
  1. Be a Full-Time student (12 Units) at San Diego State University.
    1. Final semester students who will sufficiently graduate at the end of the semester are eligible, even if taking less than 12 units.
    2. Students who graduate in the Fall semester will remain eligible for the NCBA Spring Season.
  2. NOT be on academic probation or warning.
  3. Hold a 2.0 Cumulative GPA.

From late September-November we play our fall season consisting of tournaments or exhibition games to get ready for the regular season. Our regular season takes place from February-April. The regular season is broken down into 3-game series against each of our conference opponents with some additional series outside the conference as well. Fall season is around 9 games while the regular season is around 21 games. We play doubleheaders on Saturday and one game on Sunday each series. Doubleheader games are 7 innings long while single games, including all playoff games, are 9 innings long.

One of the main goals of this team is to allow players to continue playing competitive baseball while allowing adequate time for schoolwork. While school always come first, we play in a competitive league and consistent practice is necessary to win games. Players are expected to show up to practices and games, except for reasonable circumstances and must communicate these to the board.

After tryouts are held in September, we will begin our fall season by having practices 2-3 times during the week. “Practices” may include regular practice, team workouts, conditioning, light throwing, batting practice, or intrasquad scrimmages. Fall games will be held on 3-4 weekends during October and November. Once returning from winter break for the spring semester, we will promptly begin practices 3 times per week. Days and times for practices will be announced prior to registration and players are encouraged to schedule their classes around the practice schedule. The regular season will begin in February and we will have games on about half of the weekends until mid-April. We will not play on either weekend of Spring Break. In summary, practices will be a 4-6 hour commitment per week while 3-game home series will be a 8-10 hour commitment and road trips will be a full weekend returning on Sunday afternoon/evening.

Yes, there are two rounds of playoffs in the NCBA, Regionals and the World Series. The Southern Pacific Regionals are held in Lancaster, CA. The first-place team from each conference (North, West, and South) will qualify for the regional, and one second-place team is given an At-Large bid to make an even four teams. The regional is a double elimination tournament held over a three-day period in late April. Winners of the Regionals will then qualify for the NCBA World Series in Holly Springs, NC. The World Series includes 8 teams from across the country and is a weeklong event in May, after school has ended.

If you are interested in joining the team, tryouts are held about a month after the fall semester begins, around late September. Per NCBA rules, we can carry a maximum roster of 30 players and it is a competitive roster to make. Tryouts will be held over a two-day period and players will be given significant opportunities to show off their abilities to the board of officers who will be making the final roster decisions. If you are interested in trying out, we will post updates and a link to sign up on our social media accounts under Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. We encourage all interested students to follow these accounts to not miss out on any important updates.

The team is run entirely by an elected board of student officers who also play for the team. The Head Coach and coaching staff will be “Player-Coaches” appointed by the board. Officer positions give our student-athletes great real-world experience at running an organization and being leaders.

The team is almost completely self-funded through player dues, donations and sponsorships. Players who make the team should expect to pay around $600 in dues for the year which covers everything including field fees, uniforms, road trip lodging and meals, team equipment, and more.

SDSU Club Baseball is a member of NCBA Division 1 - Southern Pacific Region - South Conference. The other teams of our Conference include: UCSD, Arizona State University, University of Arizona, Northern Arizona University and Grand Canyon University. Other notable teams from the region include UCLA, USC, Fullerton, Long Beach, Cal Poly, UCSB, UC Berkeley, SJSU, and more.

The team competed in Division 2 of the NCBA’s Pacific-South Conference for two years and then was promoted to Division 1 in 2018 after winning the D2 NCBA World Series in Pittsburg, KS.

During the regular season, the team will make at least two trips to Arizona for conference play and may travel to Central or Northern California depending on our non-conference schedule. Trips will usually be at most 400-500 miles away. If the team makes the NCBA World Series then they would be traveling to Holly Springs, NC. Team Officers put together a travel plan including lodging, drivers (carpool), meals and must adhere to many rules set forth by Aztec Recreation Sport Clubs.

All our home games are held at Ted Williams Field of Hoover High School in San Diego, about a 10-minute drive from campus. We practice here when available but also utilize local parks and fields in the area. We also use the turf fields on campus for light practice.
