Since the Aztec Aquaplex opened last spring,
students have been wondering why San Diego State does not have a water polo club. There is no need to wonder anymore.
New team President, Jeff Ranta, took the lead in the fall of 2006 and set up a meeting with Intramural and Sport Club Coordinator DeJuan Benford. Once approved, Ranta recruited a team of officers - John Wesselmann (Vice President), Ian Moore (Treasurer), and Nicholas Canstant (Secretary) – to help run the team.
The next step was to petition the Sport Club Council who approved the club in February, 2007. After the Sport Club Council, Ranta took the Water Polo concept to the Rec Board and the Rec Board approved them for participation. Finally, the water polo club was welcomed into the Sport Club Program on October 17, 2007.
The biggest obstacle the Water Polo team faces now is funding. As a new club, they are not eligible for funding through the Sport Club program until they have established themselves for one year. Instead, they will
be charging team dues, holding fundraisers,
and seeking donations.
The Water Polo Club is currently welcoming both men and women water polo players. They held Fall semester open practices on Monday evenings at the Aquaplex.
