Aztec Recreation Timeline
1961
Associated Students launches SDSU recreation programming offering Intramural Sports and Sport Clubs.
1972
The Leisure Connection is established as home to Recreation Classes and Aerobics programming.
1975
Mission Bay Aquatic Center is established in Mission Bay Park in cooperation with the University of California, San Diego.
1977
Aztec Adventures trips and equipment rental operations begin from Aztec Center.
1977
Recreational Sports Department is established at Peterson Gym and manages the Terry Pool, Sport Clubs and Intramural Sports programs.
1988
Students approve a fee for construction of the Student Activity Center which includes the Aztec Recreation Center and Arena.
1997
The Aztec Recreation Center opens.
2004
A referendum funding a new aquatics facility is passed by the student body.
2007
The Aztec Aquaplex opens.
2010
The "ModernSpace - Sustaining the Future" referendum is passed by the student body, and plans begin for a new LEED Platinum student union.
2014
The Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union opens in January including a new fitness facility, the ARC Express, and a new bowling and games center, Aztec Lanes.
2016
The Recreation Field opens.
2018
The "Transform the ARC" referendum is passed by the student body, and plans begin for an expanded and renovated LEED Platinum Aztec Recreation Center.
2019
The ENS 700 Field upgrade is completed.
2021
94,000 sq/ft Phase I of the ARC Expansion opens - All enrolled SDSU students have access to all recreation facilities.
2022
40,000 sq/ft Phase II of ARC Expansion/Renovation opens. The LEED Platinum designed recreation center is complete.
