About Wellness

The Aztec Recreation Center (ARC) Wellness program is a collaboration of the Associated Students Campus Recreation and SDSU Student Health Services. The Wellness Center offers ARC members and SDSU students a vast array of information on topics ranging from nutrition to violence prevention. All services are FREE to ARC members and SDSU students. Wellness Services offered include:

● Nutrition Information and Counseling
The Wellness Center at the ARC provides general nutrition counseling, offered by highly trained interns from the Nutrition & Exercise Department. The interns can help in areas such as weight loss and management, weight gain, vegetarian diets and other general nutrition needs. All services are free of charge, so call us today to schedule your appointment: 619-594-4133 (Health Promotion Dept.) or 619-594-0200 (The ARC).

● Smoking Cessation
The Health Promotion Department & Wellness Office offer individual tobacco cessation counseling for smoking and chewing tobacco. Counseling starts with a meeting with a Health Educator with an emphasis on behavior modification techniques for quitting. Patients will receive a Quit Kit with supplies to help them quit. The Health Educator will follow up with the patient at one, three and six months to assess success, and to see if the patient needs additional resources. Pharmacological treatment options are also available for those who desire them, but students should first meet with a Health Educator for an initial screening session. Each session lasts 30 minutes. Call today to schedule your appointment: 619-594-4133 (Health Promotion Dept.)

● Violence Prevention
The men of Frat MANers offer presentations by men for men about preventing violence against women. Frat MANers will present to any "all male" group on campus. Presentations last 50 minutes, and focus on what men can do to prevent sexual assault and violence against women. Frat MANers also hosts various violence prevention events throughout the school year.

PRICE (Preventing Rape by Intoxication through Community Education) www.wastedsex.com The Wellness Office worked with the District Attorney’s Office and other local universities on this campaign to educate young adults aged 18-25 about rape by intoxication and tried to get the message out that Sex Shouldn’t be Wasted!

For more information, call 594-1800.

● Women’s Health (Click for Orientation Schedule)
Our GYN Orientations are designed to inform SDSU women on how to take control of their sexual health. They are comprehensive sessions that cover topics such as Pap smears, birth control methods, STDs, breast self-exam (BSE) and other women's health topics. There is also a session developed specifically for lesbian women (LGYN) and their particular health issues. This special session will answer the following questions:

"Why would I benefit from a hormonal birth control method?"

"If I don't have sex with men, should I be concerned about STDs or having a pap smear?"

"Why would I use a condom?"

If you are a lesbian student who needs to attend a GYN session, we would encourage you to come to a LGYN session. Please call 619-594-4133 to schedule a session with us.

Sessions last approximatley 75 minutes and are required for women who have never had a Pap smear and/or wanting to start on a birth control method for the first time. No appointments are needed, just show up at our scheduled times and bring a friend!

● STD Information (Click for HIV Testing Times )
Health Promotion at Student Health Services offers confidential HIV testing throughout the school year as well as the summer session. If you are interested in HIV testing just stop by the Health Promotion Department at our scheduled testing times. It only takes about 25 minutes and your results will be given to you within 10 days (by scheduled appointment only). You can come to the Wellness Office at the ARC for more information. Call today to schedule your confidential appointment at the Clpulli Center: 619-594-4133 (Health Promotion Dept.)

● Peer Health Education
SDSU students can actively promote wellness on campus by becoming Peer Health Educators (PHEs). PHEs present dynamic workshops to their SDSU peers that focus on various health topics and issues that affect the lives of students. In order to be a Peer Health Educator, you must successfully complete the Peer Health Education Training class. Students have the option of receiving course credit for participating in the PHE Program Training and for active participation in the PHE Program thereafter. For more information, please check this link and then call 619-594-4133 to join the team.
