The San Diego State University Adapted Athletics High Performance Partners program started in Fall 2018. These partnerships support the program’s athletes to prevent injury, improve athletic performance, and promote an active and healthy lifestyle.
Dr. Antoinette Domingo
Lead Researcher
Antoinette Domingo, PT, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences at SDSU. She helped start the Aztec Adaptive Sports student organization in 2016 and the SDSU Adapted Athletics Program in 2018. Dr. Domingo has published research articles on motor learning, robot assisted gait training after spinal cord injury, and activity monitoring since 2005. Her research program is focused on using technology and other methods to improve the health and function of individuals with physical disabilities. In 2018, she began doing research for the SDSU Adapted Athletics program on biomechanics, injury prevention, and access to adapted sports. Dr. Domingo received her B.A. in Human Biodynamics from the University of California, Berkeley, her Master of Physical Therapy degree from the Mayo School of Health Sciences, and her PhD in Kinesiology from the University of Michigan. She completed her postdoctoral research in Kinesiology at the University of British Columbia International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries, a multidisciplinary research center focused on spinal cord injury.
Dr. Kyle Kusunose
Lead Physical Therapist
Dr. Kyle Kusunose is a part time lecturer at SDSU and local physical therapy practitioner. He believes in the power of manual therapy and approaches his patients' pain by understanding the relevant anatomy, blood supply, drainage, and innervation from the nervous system. Dr. Kusunose has been in private practice since 2014. In 2016, he founded Manual Motion Physical Therapy and Pilates Rehab, and in 2018, he started Counterstrain San Diego, where he continues to practice and hone his skills in the clinical application of Counterstrain with his patients. Dr. Kusunose graduated from San Diego State University with his bachelors in Kinesiology (2010) and earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Miami (2014).
Alison Meagher
Sports Dietitian
Alison Meagher is a lecturer at San Diego State University and heads the SDSU Sports Nutrition Cooperative (SNC). Alison is passionate about the relationship between nutrition and exercise, specifically, the vital role nutrition plays in sports performance. She believes in the power of education and her goal is to help teach and support athletes to properly fuel their bodies for training, competition, and overall health. She earned a Dual Master’s in Nutritional Science and Exercise Physiology at SDSU and during her program, she helped found the SNC, under Linda Copp. After graduating and becoming a Registered Dietitian, she came back to head the SNC as Director and has since expanded the program including a collaboration with the SDSU Adapted Athletics program.
