Numerous volunteers and high performance partners were added to the program but most notable were Kyle Kusunose, Sarah Paul and Jashan Gill.

In 2019, SDSU Adapted Athletics became an official program in the SDSU College of Health and Human Services’ School of Exercise and Nutritional Sciences. Ahkeel Whitehead became the first program director.

The Wheelchair Tennis Team competed in their first collegiate event placing 2nd at the 2019 USTA Wheelchair Tennis Collegiate Nationals.

Michelle Cross, Adapted Athletics track and field athlete and first athlete in the program, was named to the 2019 Junior World Championship and Para Pan American Team for Team U.S.A.

The adapted Athletics program officially formed in October 2018 when Dr. Steven Hooker, Dean of the College of Health and Human Services, and Keith Jones committed to financially support the program’s operations.

In October 2018, the program welcomed three wheelchair tennis athletes: Jose Estrada, Andrew Lee and Manuel Gomez.

In 2017, Ahkeel Whitehead and Ryan Lieu, student leaders in Aztec Adaptive Sports, hosted the first Aztec Adaptive Sports Colloquium, an event which brought 300+ people to Montezuma Hall to recognize the importance of collegiate adaptive sports.

In 2016, Kathy McCarty, Keith Jones, Dr. Antoinette Domingo, and Ahkeel Whitehead envisioned SDSU’s Adapted Athletics program.
