Students will learn about the various types of climbing forms and techniques (specific to top-rope anchoring and lead/sport climbing), protective hardware, placement and use, climbing anchoring systems, climbing rest maneuvers/body movement, climbing ethics/etiquette, and trip planning; practical skill application is included with a trip component.

This course includes twelve instructional sessions, online assignments, and completion of a pre-approved daylong outdoor climbing trip with Aztec Adventures instructional staff. Additional trip information provided on the first day of class.

REQUIRED COURSE PREREQUISITES: Basic knowledge and demonstration of top-rope and bouldering techniques including climbing wall etiquette, top rope management, top rope belaying with both a tubular and grigri device, climbing commands, and basic body movements. Students must have a comprehension of these topics prior to the first day of class. Completion of Beginning Rock Climbing ENS 139A is strongly recommended.
